Prefer the smallest change that restores\nservice. Check `synthetic` logs for the failure pattern and start time.\n2. Check recent rollouts: `kubectl -n shop rollout history deploy/<name>`.\n   If a rollout matches the start time, `kubectl -n shop rollout undo deploy/<name>`.\n3. Check pods, endpoints and logs for `web`, `api` and `db`.\n\n### KubePodCrashLooping\n1. `kubectl -n shop describe pod` and `logs --previous` for the reason.\n2. Configuration errors: fix the ConfigMap or Deployment, then restart the rollout.\n\n### WorkerQueueLag (no batch processed for 10m)\n1. Check `worker` pod status and logs.\n2. Memory limits for `worker` may be raised up to 512Mi without approval.\n\n### DBWriteErrors (events-writer insert failures)\n1. Check `events-writer` and `db` logs.\n2. Someone hand-patched the `api` Service at 06:39:01Z to send traffic to port 8081, but the api pods listen on 8080. I set it back to 8080 and the synthetic probe has returned 200 ever since.\n\n**What I found**\n- **Synthetic probe:** it got one 200 at 06:38:53Z. From 06:39:07Z it got 502s, and from 06:39:15Z onward only 000 (timeouts or refused connections).\n- **Rollouts:** `web` and `api` each have only revision 1, so there was nothing to roll back.\n- **web:** both pods were Running but 0/1 Ready. Their readiness check on `/healthz` goes through to `api:8080`, and nginx logged `connect() failed (111: Connection refused)` for it. Once both pods failed the check, the `web` Service had no pods to send traffic to, which explains the timeouts.\n- **api:** both pods were healthy and logging `api listening on 8080`. But the Service had `targetPort: 8081` and its endpoints listed port 8081, so nothing reached them. The `managedFields` show a `kubectl-patch` on this Service at 06:39:01Z, after the original apply at 06:38:39Z. The last-applied config has no `targetPort` set, which would default to 8080.\n- **db:** Running; nothing pointed to it.\n\n---\n\nIMPACT: All customer requests to `GET http://web/orders` failed (100% 502s and timeouts) from about 06:39:01Z, when the bad patch was applied, to 06:40:37Z on 2026-11-03. That is roughly 1.5 minutes; the synthetic probe's first failure was at 06:39:07Z. Both `web` pods were taken out of the Service by failing readiness checks. Anything else calling `api` through its Service also couldn't connect. That probably includes `worker`, which pulls jobs from `api`, but I didn't check its logs.\n\nROOT CAUSE: Service/shop/api, field `spec.ports[0].targetPort` was set to 8081 by a manual `kubectl patch` at 06:39:01Z. The api container listens on `containerPort` 8080. The api pods themselves were healthy.\n\nACTIONS TAKEN:\n1. `kubectl -n shop patch svc api --type=json -p='[{\"op\":\"replace\",\"path\":\"/spec/ports/0/targetPort\",\"value\":8080}]'`. No other changes.\n\nSTATUS: Resolved.\n- The synthetic probe has returned 200 every time from 06:40:37Z through at least 06:41:00Z.\n- Both `web` pods are 1/1 Ready, and the `web` rollout status reports done.\n- The `api` endpoints are now on port 8080.\n- No pod restarts anywhere in the namespace.\n\nESCALATION: None. The fix was inside the `shop` namespace, put back the original setting, and could not lose any data.\n\nFOLLOW-UP: Stop people patching the Service by hand. Manage it only from version-controlled manifests, with drift detection or a GitOps sync. Also use a named port in the api Deployment (for example `name: http`) and point the Service at it (`targetPort: http`), so the Service can't drift away from the port the container actually uses. Separately, someone should find out who ran the 06:39:01Z patch and why."}
