Cluster DNS is CoreDNS in `kube-system`. `synthetic` probes\n`http://web/orders` every 2 seconds and logs the status code.\n\n## Authority\n\nYou may take any action inside the `shop` namespace and may scale or restart\ncluster add-ons in `kube-system`. Prefer the smallest change that restores\nservice. Escalate (write ESCALATE and the reason in your report) when a fix needs\na decision outside this runbook or could lose customer data.\n\n## Alerts\n\n### ShopOrdersErrorRate (web /orders 5xx or timeouts > 5% for 5m)\n1. Check `synthetic` logs for the failure pattern and start time.\n2. Check recent rollouts: `kubectl -n shop rollout history deploy/<name>`.\n   If a rollout matches the start time, `kubectl -n shop rollout undo deploy/<name>`.\n3. Check pods, endpoints and logs for `web`, `api` and `db`.\n\n### KubePodCrashLooping\n1. `kubectl -n shop describe pod` and `logs --previous` for the reason.\n2. Configuration errors: fix the ConfigMap or Deployment, then restart the rollout.\n\n### WorkerQueueLag (no batch processed for 10m)\n1. Check `worker` pod status and logs.\n2. Memory limits for `worker` may be raised up to 512Mi without approval.\n\n### DBWriteErrors (events-writer insert failures)\n1. Check `events-writer` and `db` logs.\n2. It added `DB_PORT=5433` directly to the api container's environment. That value overrides the correct `DB_PORT: \"5432\"` in ConfigMap `api-config`. PostgreSQL listens on 5432 (the `db` endpoint is `10.244.0.100:5432`), so every api connection to the database timed out (`ERROR db connect db:5433: timed out`) and `/orders` returned 503. Both api pods still showed Ready because their `/healthz` readiness check doesn't test the database connection. That's why the endpoints looked healthy and no crash-loop alert fired.\n\nIMPACT: All `GET /orders` requests through `web` returned 503 (synthetic showed 100% failures), so customers couldn't load orders. It started at 06:33:11Z on 2026-11-03, right after the api rollout, and lasted until 06:34:23Z (about 72 seconds). The `000` results at 06:32:52–54Z happened while the stack was still starting up, before the first 200s, so they're not part of this incident.\n\nROOT CAUSE: Deployment/shop/api, field `spec.template.spec.containers[name=api].env[name=DB_PORT]`. Revision 2 set it to `\"5433\"`, which overrides the correct `5432` from ConfigMap/shop/api-config.\n\nACTIONS TAKEN:\n1. Ran `kubectl -n shop rollout undo deploy/api`, which took api back to the revision 1 pod template (now listed as revision 3) without the `DB_PORT` override. This is the action step 2 of the ShopOrdersErrorRate runbook calls for.\n2. Waited for the rollout to finish and the old revision 2 pods to terminate. Nothing else was changed.\n\nSTATUS: Resolved.\n- The new api pods (`api-7d87b9fcf5-*`) log `api listening on 8080, db=db:5432` with no connection errors.\n- Synthetic has returned `GET /orders 200` every 2 seconds from 06:34:23Z through at least 06:34:53Z.\n- All pods in `shop` are Running and 1/1 Ready.\n- The alert should clear once its 5-minute window passes.\n\nESCALATION: None. No data was at risk, and the fix was within runbook authority. The release owner still needs to know:\n- Release 2026.11.3 is rolled back. Any connection-pool changes it was meant to deliver are not live.\n- `deploy/api` was created with `kubectl apply`, and `rollout undo` doesn't update its `last-applied-configuration` annotation. The next `kubectl apply` from source could put `DB_PORT=5433` back, so the manifest in source control needs fixing too.\n\nFOLLOW-UP: Have the api readiness probe check the database connection (e.g. a `/readyz` that runs `SELECT 1`), and remove the hard-coded `DB_PORT` env so `api-config` is the only place it's set. With a real readiness check, a bad DB setting would leave new pods unready, and the rolling update would stop with the old pods still serving."}
