Cluster DNS is CoreDNS in `kube-system`. `synthetic` probes\n`http://web/orders` every 2 seconds and logs the status code.\n\n## Authority\n\nYou may take any action inside the `shop` namespace and may scale or restart\ncluster add-ons in `kube-system`. Prefer the smallest change that restores\nservice. Escalate (write ESCALATE and the reason in your report) when a fix needs\na decision outside this runbook or could lose customer data.\n\n## Alerts\n\n### ShopOrdersErrorRate (web /orders 5xx or timeouts > 5% for 5m)\n1. Check `synthetic` logs for the failure pattern and start time.\n2. Check recent rollouts: `kubectl -n shop rollout history deploy/<name>`.\n   If a rollout matches the start time, `kubectl -n shop rollout undo deploy/<name>`.\n3. Check pods, endpoints and logs for `web`, `api` and `db`.\n\n### KubePodCrashLooping\n1. `kubectl -n shop describe pod` and `logs --previous` for the reason.\n2. Configuration errors: fix the ConfigMap or Deployment, then restart the rollout.\n\n### WorkerQueueLag (no batch processed for 10m)\n1. Check `worker` pod status and logs.\n2. Memory limits for `worker` may be raised up to 512Mi without approval.\n\n### DBWriteErrors (events-writer insert failures)\n1. Check `events-writer` and `db` logs.\n2. A config change had cut its memory limit from 192Mi to 48Mi, below what it needs. I rolled the change back.\n\nIMPACT: Background job processing by `shop/worker` stopped. From 05:41:50Z (when revision 2 rolled out) the worker was OOMKilled each time it started (exit 137, 3+ restarts, then CrashLoopBackOff), so no job batches were processed. Customer-facing `/orders` was not affected: `synthetic` kept returning 200 the whole time. Jobs simply waited in the queue.\n\nROOT CAUSE: Deployment/shop/worker, field `spec.template.spec.containers[worker].resources.limits.memory` (and `requests.memory`). Revision 2 changed the limit from 192Mi to 48Mi and the request from 96Mi to 48Mi. The worker allocates a `BATCH_MB=64` MiB buffer every cycle, plus the Python runtime on top, so 48Mi can't fit even one batch.\n\nACTIONS TAKEN:\n1. `kubectl -n shop rollout undo deploy/worker`: went back to the revision 1 template (limit 192Mi, request 96Mi). 192Mi is within the runbook's 512Mi allowance for worker.\n\nSTATUS: Resolved. New pod `worker-85767c58ff-cfhrg` is Running with 0 restarts, and its logs show repeated `processed batch` lines. The live spec reads `limits.memory=192Mi, requests.memory=96Mi`. Synthetic `/orders` is returning 200.\n\nESCALATION: None. No data was at risk, and the fix stayed within the runbook's worker memory allowance. The owner of the revision 2 change should still confirm whether cutting memory was intentional, for example as cost tuning. If it was, they need to lower `BATCH_MB` in the same change.\n\nFOLLOW-UP: Before any worker memory change is merged, check that the new limit is at least `BATCH_MB` plus runtime overhead, either in CI or by deriving the limit from `BATCH_MB`. Note that `kubectl` warned the rollback didn't update the `last-applied-configuration` annotation. The source manifest in git must also be reverted to 192Mi/96Mi, or the next `kubectl apply` will bring the 48Mi limit back."}
